Abstract: The talk centers around the idea of aesthetics, buying and collecting of art. Art in India has moved from the sacred to the commercial and the journey has been a dynamic and challenging one. Is there a conflict of interest between commercially expensive art and good art? What defines good art? Does good art have to be ugly and difficult to comprehend? While the definition of art is changing from the traditional to contemporary practices, the patron of art too are changing. From the temples to the royals, art is often looked as commodity of investment. The talk will attempt to contextualize the co-existence of Lakshmi and Saraswati - the aesthetics in the commercial - of art in India.

Guest Speaker: Mr. Nayan Chandra, well known author, columnist & Director Publications and Editor, Yale Global Online Magazine at the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization. He will be speaking to us on "The History of Globalization".The word “globalisation” evokes a visceral reaction like no other. It is accused of unemployment and inequality in the West,of increasing global poverty throughout the world, and hastening ecological catastrophe through unbridled exploitation of natural resources. However, while concerns are justified, they are not the result of some policy called “globalisation”, but the consequences of an accelerated process of interconnectedness.
Today the problems emerge at unprecedented speed and are more visible, leading one to blame the process rather than the driving force behind it. What are the economic and technological forces driving globalisation? How did the history of science, politics, commerce and religion create today's international system? What is the past and what lies in store for globalization? These are some of the questions that will be addressed from a historical perspective.
Speaker Nayan Chanda was previously with the Far Eastern Economic Review for almost 30 years as editor-at-large, editor and correspondent. He is the author and co-author of a dozen books. His most recent book Bound Together: How Traders, Preachers,Adventurers and Warriors Shaped Globalization, published in India by Penguin Books has been translated into seven languages. He is the 2005 recipient of the Shorenstein Award for journalism presented jointly by Stanford and Harvard Universities. He writes a regular column for Business World and Times of India.
